DATA PROTECTION

Privacy policy

This page explains what data is technically processed when using BöRu-Wildlife and which functions store information in the browser.

Hosting & server access

BöRu-Wildlife is hosted on a privately operated Synology NAS. When the site is requested, the web server and reverse proxy necessarily process connection data such as the IP address, time, requested path and technical request information. Depending on the server/container logging configuration, this data may also appear temporarily in technical logs. It is used for secure and reliable operation and troubleshooting.

Local visitor & viewer statistics

BöRu-Wildlife uses a self-hosted statistics service on the same infrastructure. The browser receives a random visitor ID (boru-stats-visitor) in local storage and sends small heartbeats at intervals. The statistics database stores aggregated visits, page views, online status, camera viewers and stream starts. The statistics application does not permanently store IP addresses.

Theme & browser storage

The selected display mode is stored locally in the browser under boru-theme-mode. In Auto mode, the website follows the operating system light/dark preference. These settings are used only to provide the requested website functionality.

PWA / offline function

The website can be installed as a Progressive Web App. A service worker may cache static website files locally so that the interface can start reliably. Live streams, camera endpoints, statistics API responses and archive videos are excluded from offline caching.

Live cameras & video archive

The cameras are intended to show only the hedgehog house, birdhouse and their immediate surroundings. The exact location is not published. Live streams are delivered from the local camera infrastructure through go2rtc, nginx and HTTPS. Selected recordings are published in the video archive. For privacy reasons, no sound or audio data may be transmitted or published through the publicly available live streams. If a camera technically provides an audio track, it must be disabled for the public web stream or must not be played back. The website live view is therefore permanently muted and is intended exclusively for video transmission.

Sharing & external services

Sharing buttons open external services such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, X, LinkedIn or the device sharing dialog only when you actively choose them. From that point onward, the respective provider processes data under its own privacy terms. BöRu-Wildlife itself does not embed external social-media tracking pixels.

Cookies & local storage

BöRu-Wildlife currently does not use its own advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Local storage is used for the theme setting and the random statistics visitor ID. Browser/PWA caches may additionally store static website files.

Storage duration

The local statistics use short-lived heartbeats to determine who is currently online. Aggregated visit and stream-start counters remain in the local SQLite database until they are deliberately deleted or reset. Technical server logs, where enabled, follow the retention configured on the NAS/container platform.

Your rights

Where personal data is processed, applicable data-protection law may provide rights such as access, rectification, deletion, restriction and objection. You may contact the controller using the address above. You also have the right to contact the competent data-protection supervisory authority.

Guestbook

When you submit a guestbook message, the name you provide, an optional location, the message, and the date and time are stored on the local server. New messages are initially hidden and moderated before publication. The technical IP address is used only briefly for spam rate limiting and is not published with the guestbook entry.
